More views on the COSEWIC finding that four Atlantic cod populations are "endangered"

COSEWIC  is proposing that four populations of Atlantic cod, including the Newfoundland and Labrador population, be designated as endangered. Reaction from the Nfld Union and the province as well as some individual fishermen has been swift and furious. The provincial government and the union representing the thousands of people who work in the fishing industry in Newfoundland and Labrador believe the assessment is off the mark.

In an editorial * For Cod's Sake", released subsequent to my online Editorial, The St. John's Telegram concluded that any decision should be based on the scientific facts. Coments on the Telegram editorial posted online range widely from challenging COSEWIC's conclusions to expressing fear that if cod were listed as " endangered" it would be impossible to get it off the list in future. Others agreed that action should be taken.

Feds gets warrant to seize Faroese fishing vessel

A warrant was issued in St. John's for the seizure of a Faroese fishing vessel accused of illegal fishing in Canadian waters. The federal government alleges that the fishing vessel Enniberg, based out of the Danish-owned Faroe Islands, was inside Canada's boundary near Nunavut in October 2009.

The warrant was granted, although no one associated with or representing the vessel was in court.

Gus Etchegary, a retired fisheries executive who has long campaigned against foreign overfishing, said he does not believe the ship will ever be brought to shore. Etchegary said he would like to see Canada take greater action on foreign trawlers working on the Grand Banks where overfishing is known to be rampant.

Some Commercial Fishermen in B.C. Sue Canadian Government

Some commercial fishermen in B.C. are suing  the Canadian government. They contend that the government has "radically restructure(ed) the commercial fishery," choking off access to publicly owned fish stocks to "confer economic and social benefits on the defendant and particular third parties," such as Native Americans. They allege that the government illegally restructured commercial fishing by imposing vessel quotas on salmon, halibut and roe herring, reducing the number of licensed commercial salmon vessels, and restricting access to certain waters.

More Cod in the Barents Sea

Science Daily reports that there are more cod in the Barents Sea now due to the influence that currents have on cod stocks.  Research being led by Ken Drinkwater, a senior research scientist at the Institute of Marine Research in Norway,  indicates that back in the 1920s and 1930s, the Barents Sea was teeming with cod. That was before its waters substantially cooled off in the decades to follow. Now, with ocean temperatures higher once again, fishermen are seeing more fish.
