The Economics of Adaptation to Climate Change Synthesis Report

(World Bank, 2010) This Report estimates the costs of adaptation will be between US$70-100 billion per year between now and 2050.Among the lessons from seven case studies and a global study, the report highlights that eliminating poverty is central to both development and adaptation, since poverty exacerbates vulnerability to weather variability as well as climate change. The study argues that investments should start with low regret options, including measures that tackle the weather risks that countries already face such as increased investment in water storage in drought-prone basins or protection against storms and

flooding in coastal zones and/or urban areas. Download here

Ecological Economics of the Oceans and Coasts

This book offers a fresh view on how oceans and coasts are, and should be, managed. The urgency of this issue is increasingly being recognized as critical limits to the economic exploitation of our oceans and coasts are reached. Ecological economics is in a unique position to address this problem give its particular focus on inter-connected ecological and economics systems. Four cornerstones are presented: sustainability, bio-physical limits of marine systems, a view on managing marine systems, and a methodologically pluralistic approach.

STUDY: The socio-economics behind ecosystem collapse: the case of the Black Sea

Marine ecosystem recovery is directly linked to socio-economic choices, according to a recent study. The study focused on the Black Sea, where economic collapse and recovery in the surrounding regions has had a large impact on ecosystem collapse and recovery in recent years. The study, conducted under the EU funded ELME project, used models to better understand the relationship between European lifestyles and marine ecosystems. It suggested that recovery might be possible through co-operation between Black Sea countries, for example, by implementing international agreements that limit how fish stocks are exploited.

STUDY: Marine reserve networks could benefit fishing and conservation

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) usually entail a trade-off between conservation goals and the goals of commercial and recreational fishing. A new study indicates that connecting MPAs into networks could reduce this trade-off. It suggests design guidelines for these networks in terms of size, spacing, location and configuration.

Study: Management of Large Marine Areas

Conservation International recently commissioned an independent analysis to heplp us understand the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches to managing large-scale marine areas. The report, Comparison of Approaches to Management of Large Marine Areas  by Robert Bensted-Smith and Hugh Kirkman, identifies ways organizations can work together and learn from each others' experiences by providing interesting regional case studies for support.

Study: Best Practices- Characteristics of Well-Managed Fisheries

Several of us involved in the C-FOAM Research Cluster at the University of Otawa have been involved in studying the Characteristics of Well-Managed Fishies/Best Practices in Fisheries Management. Below are several publications that are the product of that research.
